It is important to remember that only by interplay (congruence) of verbal and non-verbal expressions can we achieve a sense of authenticity and truthfulness in the receiver. If we manage to come to an understanding of what and why we are communicating, if the person with whom we are communicating understands the information as we intend to transfer it, including the non-verbal component, then we can say that we are communicating effectively.
